The Open Odyssey
Hastings Contemporary and Sussex Contemporary have partnered to launch our first Open exhibition
Our first open exhibition celebrates the creative force of Sussex, bringing together artwork by over 150 artists from across the region. Each work offers a unique and personal reflection on the theme of Odyssey, journeying through time, place, imagination and experience.
The exhibited works were selected from over 2,600 entries, and span painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, textiles, ceramics, sculpture, film and installation, reflecting the ambition, diversity and creative bravery of the region.
This milestone, gallery-wide exhibition includes artists of international renown; Jennifer Binnie, Rachel Howard, Gary Hume, Martin Maloney, Alessandro Raho, Anne Ryan, Andrew Sabin and presents an exciting snapshot of artistic excellence in Sussex in 2026. All works will be available to purchase.
Theme: Odyssey
This theme reflects on journeys shaped by tides, time, and transformation, on the restless call of the sea and the stories it inspires. Hastings, a place long defined by its proximity to the coast, provides a fitting setting for such explorations.

Exhibition at the Star Gallery in Lewes
Star Brewery Gallery is pleased to host a solo exhibition of oil paintings and figurative sculptures by Sarah Money. The Sussex artist’s work is characterised by loose, dynamic forms that emphasise the combined qualities of movement, texture and colour
Sculpture and the human body
Throughout her adult life Sarah Money has performed in physical theatre and contemporary dance. She studied Dance with Visual Practice at the University of `Brighton under Liz Agiss, and she has taught Pilates for 20 years. This closeness to movement and the workings of the human body are evident in her sculptural practice.
Rhythm, movement and the evocation of emotion through body language are the motivations behind her practice. While her portrait heads are created directly from the model, her figures emerge from observational life drawing and her imagination. She uses heavy-grogged clay and once the pieces have been hollowed out, they are biscuit-fired, then stone-fired and glazed or painted. The use of turquoise is inspired by the artist’s travels to Arizona, spending time within the Navaho community.
Colour
Other colours reflect her interest in the aesthetics of antiquity: “like the figures have been unearthed, or they have been underwater for a long time.” Money’s paintings have an equally physical presence. She uses a palette knife, and even her fingers, to load paint onto the canvas, repeatedly scraping back and adding more layers. This produces an energetic and vivid impasto. The process is a wholly intuitive one: these are not still life flowers, but what she describes as “the idea of a flower” conjured from memory and imagination.
She lives in the village of Chiddingly and works from two idyllically situated studios – one for sculpting, one for painting – surrounded by the flora that infuse and animate her luminous canvases.
Sarah Money’s work is held in private collections in the UK and the US.
